Keeping with tradition, the festival of the patron saint of the city of Antonina, Nossa Senhora do Pilar, has never changed its celebration date since the church foundation on August 15, 1714. The history tells that two devout sisters of the saint started the novenas (ritualistic devotional worship) from around 1712 to the present day, the date is commemorated with all traditional Catholic liturgies. Since the 6th, novenas are held in preparation for the big party. The highlight of the festivities is the 15th, with a festive sunrise at 6:00 am, performed by the traditional musical band Filarmônica Antoninense and a beautiful fireworks display at night.
